Volatility sets how much a position can move against you in a week, and how big a position should be. When stocks also move together, owning many of them protects less; when the spread between them is wide, stock choice matters more.

Volatility is the standard deviation of daily moves over the past month, annualized. Dividing by about 16 gives the typical daily move. Correlation is estimated from the index’s volatility against the average stock’s, so it is approximate.
In our research, where the VIX sits in its own five-year history is the best single gauge of future market risk; it predicts risk, not direction. These readings are descriptive.
