How far are stocks from their highs?
An index near a record can hide a market where the typical stock is well off its peak. Looking at how far each stock sits below its own 52-week high shows how much of the market is actually doing well, and where the damage is concentrated.

How to read this page
How it’s measured. Every S&P 500 stock as it stood on each day, measured against its highest close of the prior year. Scores compare each reading with its own last five years.
Sources. Daily prices from Financial Modeling Prep.
A 52-week high is the highest close in the past year. The distance below it is the familiar drawdown measure; the score shows how today compares with the past five years.
Distance from a high describes the damage, not what comes next. In our research, buying stocks simply because they fell has not paid on its own, even when the business looked sound.
