Is the market healthy right now?

Most of any stock’s move is the market’s move. When the market is stressed, good companies fall with bad ones and price swings grow. Knowing the backdrop tells you how much to trust any single stock’s story.

How to read this page

How it’s measured. Each gauge is measured against its own last five years.

Sources. Daily prices from Financial Modeling Prep; the VIX from Cboe via FRED; scores from Stox.

The large number is a score from 0 to 100. It shows where today sits in that gauge’s own five-year history, so 100 is the healthiest reading and 0 the most stressed. The line beneath it is the familiar value the score comes from.

The overall score averages the four core gauges. In our research only volatility predicts anything, and it predicts future price swings, not returns. Treat the other gauges as a description of today.
