Who is buying back their own stock?
When a company buys back shares, each remaining share owns more of the business, and the company is signalling it sees value in its own stock. What counts is the share count: buybacks that only offset stock paid to employees return nothing to owners.

How to read this page
How it’s measured. Diluted share count in the latest quarter against a year earlier, and dollars spent on buybacks over the last four quarters, for S&P 500 companies. Changes over 50% are left out as mergers or spin-offs.
Sources. Company financial statements from Financial Modeling Prep.
Share count change is net: shares bought back minus new shares issued, mostly as pay to employees. A company can spend heavily on buybacks and still see its share count rise.
Buybacks help owners only when the price paid is sensible. The score ranks the reduction in share count from 0 to 100.
