Which stocks are splitting, and what happens after?

A stock split hands shareholders more shares at a lower price and changes nothing about the company’s value. Companies split after big gains, so splits flag strong stocks, and a lower price can widen the pool of buyers.

How to read this page

How it’s measured. Split dates from FMP for US-listed companies worth at least $2 billion, upcoming and over the past year. The track record uses every split of 2-for-1 or more in S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 stocks since 2010, with prices adjusted for the split.

Sources. Daily prices and earnings and economic calendars from Financial Modeling Prep.

After a 10-for-1 split a $1,000 share becomes ten $100 shares; the value of a holding is unchanged. Prices here are adjusted so the split itself does not show as a fall.

Splits follow strong runs, so the record before them is good by selection; what happens after is the fairer test, and it rests on a few dozen cases.
