What is Congress trading?

Members of Congress write the laws and get the briefings that move industries, and many of them trade stocks. Their trades are public by law, so anyone can see what they are buying and selling, though the reports arrive weeks after the fact.

How to read this page

How it’s measured. Periodic transaction reports filed by senators and representatives under the STOCK Act, via FMP. Trades in individual stocks made over the past 90 days, by members and their spouses. Amounts are reported in ranges; dollar figures here use each range’s midpoint.

Sources. Daily prices and congressional trade disclosures from Financial Modeling Prep.

Members must report a trade within 45 days, so the most recent weeks fill in over time. Reports cover spouses and dependent children, and amounts come only as ranges, such as $1,001 to $15,000.

Studies disagree on whether members’ trades beat the market, and the reporting delay means any edge would be stale by the time it is public. We have not tested it ourselves.
