Which stocks are most shorted?
Short sellers borrow shares to sell, betting the price will fall, and they tend to be well-informed skeptics. Heavy short interest flags a contested stock, and when the price rises instead, short sellers buying back can fuel a squeeze.

Short sellers busier than usual
Short sellers have bet against 3.1% of the freely traded shares of the typical S&P 500 company, more than a year ago and higher than in 94% of reports over five years. How to read this page
How it’s measured. Short interest reported by brokers to FINRA twice a month, for stocks in the S&P 500, Nasdaq-100 and Russell 1000, divided by each company’s freely traded shares from FMP. Days to cover divides the shares short by average daily volume.
Sources. Daily prices from Financial Modeling Prep; short interest and margin data from FINRA.
Short interest is reported about a week after each settlement date, so it lags. Some short positions hedge convertible bonds or other holdings rather than bet on a fall.
Heavy shorting has not reliably predicted either a fall or a squeeze; it measures disagreement about a stock.
