Who is joining or leaving the S&P 500?

Trillions of dollars in index funds must buy every company that joins the S&P 500 and sell every one that leaves, so changes move prices and mark a company’s arrival among America’s largest. Most changes follow mergers, spin-offs and quarterly rebalances.

How to read this page

How it’s measured. Index changes from S&P’s announcements via FMP, with prices from our archive. Candidates are US companies worth at least $20 billion that are not in the index, have traded for a year and were profitable over the last four quarters and in the latest one, which are the main published rules. S&P’s committee makes the final decisions.

Sources. Daily prices and S&P index announcements from Financial Modeling Prep.

Changes are usually announced about a week before they take effect, and much of the price move happens in between. The chart is set to zero on the day the change took effect.

Being eligible does not mean a company will be added: the committee also weighs sector balance, share liquidity and how much stock is freely traded.
