How much do the biggest companies dominate?
An S&P 500 fund puts more money in larger companies, so a handful of giants can decide how the whole index does. When concentration is high, owning the index is a bigger bet on a few businesses than it looks.

How to read this page
How it’s measured. Market value from each company’s price and diluted share count, for the S&P 500 as it stood on each day; Alphabet, Fox and News Corp are counted once. Scores compare each reading with its history since 2016.
Sources. Daily prices and company financial statements from Financial Modeling Prep.
Market value here uses diluted shares, so weights differ slightly from the official float-adjusted index. Contribution is the weight a year ago times the return since.
High concentration is not a forecast. It means the index’s result depends more on a few companies, and that an equal-weight fund is a meaningfully different bet.
